I when I go run/cmd, or run/command, the directory c:\\documents and
settings\(the default file name) opens. I cannot use any other command other
than “dir†after that. This may have started after I reinstalled Winsock
files. Tried XP Restore-no luck. How can I reset the system to get to config?

I do not get an error messages, Just cannot do anything othet than use the
'dir' command-cannot 'config' or anything else. I will try the link. Let me
know if you have other ideas. Thanx.

Next time, try opening the Command Prompt from Start>>Program.
It should lead to the c:\> prompt.

The other alternative would be to enter "cd\" (minus the quotes)
and enter. It should also lead to the c:\> prompt.

What happens when DOS commands are entered from the c:\> prompt?
Report back. The PATH may need to be re-set.

Let to the same place "C:\Documents and Settings\ (file).
I used f12 to run a diagnosis...maybe got over my head. How could the path
be reset?

If one must ask, then use an easier method. Use Command
Prompt instead. Right click for its properties and then
specify it to start in C:\.

No matter where I attempt to start dos from, the results are the same.
Command Prompt goes to C:\Documents and Settings\ (file)…Run/cmd or
Run/command goes to the same place. The only command that works is “dirâ€
showing the contents of the file in "C:\Documents and Settings\ (file)â€. I
have rebooted and used restore. I cannot use any other command….seems frozen
in “dir†(I really do appreciate the assistance and am following
instructions… thanx)

Do you have administrator's privileges on this computer?

Yes. It's a personal computer. That's another strange thing that changed
lately and prompted me to look at the dos screen (starting all of this). When
I start up, a "safe-mode" type screen asks for the administerator password
before booting starts. Maybe this gives you a clue?
