I am running windows XP SP2 and I am having a hard time with games like
Icewind Dale II and Neverwinter Nights. I am in the middle of playing a game
and my computer just turns off. I did not have this problem until I
installed SP 2. Any suggestions?

May I add some games do not work in XP, Kelly. For example, KQ 4 by Sierra
will not play sound in XP but works fine in 98SE. I have been unable to run
KQ5 at all in XP Pro. but it also works fine in 98SE. I suggest the user
create a dual-boot machine with 98SE and XP Pro. It is the only way to go
and maintain all the compatibility that is essential in old-school MS-DOS
games.

: What documentation do you have to along with that suggestion/statement. Am
: very interested!

OP: It hurts when I do this.

Heliostrpolis: Stop doing it.

What documentation would you like to see?

Where uninstalling XP2 will fix a problem with a dos game?

It's not a question of whether uninstalling SP2 will *fix* the problem;
the OP thinks that installing SP2 *caused* the problem. We know that SP2
*does* cause problems with some applications. The OP thought he
detected a cause-and-effect relationship, and the relationship may or
may not be valid. There's one simple way to test the hypothesis, though...

Thanks for the link, Steve. I may try DOSBox and see if it works with the KQ
games in XP Pro. I can let you know if it works if you would like me to.

: Try running your DOS games with DOSBox. Police Quest would run without
sound

The site has a list of all the games that work and don't work with it... and
it is quite extensive (2557 games in the database as of now). It does report
that all KQ games work.

Steve

Sure you may, Dan. As I am not a gamer and this is not a gamer group, I
can't argue with you. The only other thing that comes to mind within this
