A short summary of problems: I noticed I could not start applications on
desktop or in the Start>Programs mode. I rebooted.

1. Many of the icons (most) were changed to a strange generic type. They
would not open, and had the INK extension. Renaming or removing the ext did
not good. I got the message asking what application I would like to open the
file I clicked on.
2. Help and Support and others were not available in the start menu. This
eliminates the possiblilty of using system restore.
3. The interenet via a cable modem works fine, but I cannot open outlook
exp for email.
4. A DVD Drive and DVD R/W Drive are no longer found in My Computer.
Shortcuts on the desktop also changed to the INK extension no longer work.

I have to guess a virus hit this thing. I don't think I could have screwed
this up this bad on my own. Any clues anyone? Please??????

Sounds suspicious. I would expect a virus or worm of some kind. But don't
rule out a hardware or even a driver failure. Check the RAM as well. Crack
open the case and have a look at the inside. Power off the system, do not
unplug the power cord. With the case open, touch the chassis of the case,
not the motherboard or any of the hardware on it. This will take care of
any static charge you may be carrying.

Pop the RAM out and then reseat it. Check the video card. See if it's
loose and check the connectors on it and the motherboard as well. Check the
IDE cables on the drives for a solid connection from drive to motherboard.
Leave the case open and power up the system. If it boots to the desktop,
check with Device Manager for any problems.

Update and run all your security software.
