I've been having a few lock-ups and random crashes lately and thought that it might be about time to get back to basics with the progs I want to run and also to upgrade a little. I've had my pc for about 4 years now and over that time the odd bits of software have been added here and there, but I quite like the idea of starting afresh. Mainly I'd like to return to a video editing machine along with a bit of graphic work, internet access, and email etc - with the addition of DVD writing (currently only have a DVD-Rom). I have no gaming requirements.

OK here's my pc spec:

Full Tower Case (2 bays spare)
100 Mhz BX Motherboard, 2 ISA, 5 PCI, USB etc. Jumperless goes up to 1100 Mhz.
Intel Pentium 650 Mhz Processor, 512K Cache
Heatsink/Fan - Standard
256 Mb 100 Mhz SDRAM
13.2 Gb UDMA 66 Program Hard Drive
30 Gb UDMA-66 7200 rpm Video Hard Drive
12x DVD Drive
Yamaha CRW 8424 CD Re-Writer, SCSI
PCI SCSI-II Card with external connector
1.44 Mb Floppy Drive
Matrox G400 Series 32Mb Dualhead Display TV Output AGP Graphics Card
Pinnacle DV500 Digital / Analogue Video Editing System
17" Monitor
Soundblaster Live Platinum system
Running Windows 98 SE

OK, now I have never attempted any upgrades, so to start with I'd like to try something simple (i'm not very handy with a screwdriver) - like adding a DVD-writer. :) Any suggestions for a cheap one which would work ok?

Next question, could it be a good idea to replace my main prog hd with a new one - this would give me a clean start and save me having to tidy up the existing one?

In general are there any other upgrades worth considering - or should I start again from scratch with a new system?

I would most definatly suggest a new system. it wont cost you too much if you dont want anything spectacular.

Sniff.

OK, I don't really have a lot of spare cash at the mo - so rather than starting with a new system I could get a dvd-writer to keep me ticking over, couldn't I?

i suppose you could just make sure it works with your system, then you could always put it in your new system (if it doesn't have one)

Yes, you could ... replace the DVD drive with it. Keep an eye on your HD space when using it.

;)

get some more ram if it fits. dobule it up at the very least...............

upgrading your cpu will be a bit difficult though.
