can you create a domain in xp pro for a peer to peer network?

No.
You require a Windows Server opertaing system to do this such as Windows
Server 2003.

my problem is that the enduser wants to set up a peer to peer network (4machines) and allow one client machine to view and change on folder, then the other client machine to access a different folder.....any ideas

Sorry Mark, I'm not sure I understand your question.
It is perfectly possible to allow other machines and users on those machines
access your PC in a workgroup and they can have the ability to alter files
and folders.
Can you be more specific.

You don't need need domains in order to do that. Just configure all
machines to be in the same workgroup.

Greetings --

Ah...., I hate to break it to you, but domains and peer-to-peer
networking are mutually exclusive. You can have one or the other, but
not both.

ok so i tried to share the folder on the server machine and the client machine can access the folder, but I dont' want the other client machine to access the folder

do you have to set up user accounts on the server machine for all the machine that you want to set specific permissions

I have simple file sharing turned off......so the sharing tab, how do i add the client machine to this pool?.....It only allows me to add a user that I have created on the server machine.

I agree about putting all the computers in the same workgroup, but can I then allow one client machine access to one folder and not to another folder that is shared on the network.

I am finding that if you share the folder all the machines can access the folder.....I need to set permissions for each client machine

Mark,

You do not implement this kind of security by machine.
It is done by user accounts and access control to the file system and the
share itself.
Since you insist on being in a workgroup, you create users accounts on your
"server" for everyone you want to apply security permissions to.
You then set the files/folders and share permissions on that "server" using
those accounts.
Then each person has an account that matches the one for them on the server
(same account name and password). These accounts (again because you are in
a workgroup) are local to each machine (so if users use more then one
machine you will have to create the account on each machine they use).
The user then logs on locally to the machine and will find that they have
the appropriate permissions on the shares, folders and files on the server
(because it has the same account as the one they're using on the machine).

Note : if they ever decide to change there password then it will need to be
changed on every machine where they have an account and on the "server".
This is why you really use a Network Operating System like Windows Server
2003 to create a security domain as it greatly simplifies this process.
Workgroups are just not there for real security controls or usage.
