I recently had a laptop on my network die, and replaced it with a new one. I
put in the same settings that I had on the old machine but cannot see the dns
server. how do I join the domain.

Ask the domain's network administrator for assistance; you'd need to
have domain admin privileges or OU admin privileges to create a new
account for the new computer.
