we have a single xp pro station in the office, employee away, locked with
logon only allowed by a named user

even the "Administrator" account will not unlock the logon

any suggestions before I cut the power and reformat hd?

Have your Administrator try this, it MIGHT work:
Turn off computer, restart your computer and start pressing the F8 key on
your keyboard. On a computer that is configured for booting to multiple
operating systems, you can press the F8 key when you see the Boot Menu. When
the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, select an option. I suggest Safe
Mode with Networking (SAFEBOOT_OPTION=Network): This option uses a minimal
set of device drivers and services to start Windows, plus the drivers that
you need to load networking. The Administrator SHOULD be able to log in,
then exit and restart normally. This will only work with an authorized
Administrator.

Good Luck
