Does XP "call home" to Microsoft?

I'd like to give a computer to a friend who doesn't have internet
access. Will XP Home (it's properly activated) stop working after
awhile if it can't connect to Microsoft?

If it does "call home" then how often does it do it?

No.

The first time you use Windows XP, you will need to
connect to Microsoft via a telephone line (you don't need
Internet access) to activate it.

After this, Windows will not need you to connect to the
Internet at all as far as I know.

Actually, not all manufacturers have the system pre-activated before
shipment, and when you turn the machine on for the first time, it will ask
to activate. This can be done entirely over the phone, though.

It can be done entirely over the phone, but the computer does not need
to ever be hooked up to the phone! You can call MS yourself to
activate the non-hooked up computer.

A small, but important difference!
