No. Your employer is wrong.

Neither Windows XP, nor any other version of Windows, has ever included
Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access, or any other significant application
software. Such programs have to be bought, either by themselves or as part
of Microsoft Office.

If your employer bought a computer which came with these, it was because the
vendor who sold it bundled it as part of the package he sold, not because
Windows came with it.

No, not ever.

However, PC manufacturers may bundle MS Office or MS Word or MS Excel with
new PCs.

Word/Excel may come as part of the "Computer System" bundle by the
selling vendor, but they have never come as part of the Microsoft
Windows Operating System package.

No. However, some OEM's may bundle MS Office that includes
Word and Excel as purchase options when selling new computers.

Sure - bundled with - but they are not part of the Windows operating system.
Heck, some retailers will bundle Corel Draw or Norton Utilities if their
customers ask for them. Heck, some retailers would bundle their grandmothers
with Windows if they they it would clinch the sale.

All that means is that the retailer is selling the computer with Windows and
has also installed Microsoft Office as part of the deal. But Windows and
Office are two distinct products. Windows is the operating system and
Microsoft Office is a suite of programs including a word processor program
[Word] and a spread sheet program [Excel] etc.

He may have had Office XP Professional, sometimes known as Office 2002
Professional and, yes, both Word and Excel come with that. At least the
one I have does ;-)

You are of course correct that when he says "XP Professional, he *could*
mean Office XP Professional, not Windows XP Professional. But since he's
asking the question in a *Windows* newsgroup, not an Office one, the odds
are very strongly that it's Windows XP he's asking about.

And yes it's also possible that the communication between Cardian and his
emplyer is confused, and although Cardian meant to ask about Windows, he
misunderstood his employer who was talking about Office. But again, it's
unlikely. We frequently misunderstand people here because the written word
is especially prone to such an error, but chances are that Cardian and his
employer have discussed this in person, where what each meant is clearer
than in newsgroup postings.

But I'll certainly grant you the possibility that I'm wrong and that's what
was meant. I just don't think so.

One of my relatives still calls Microsoft Windows:

"WordPerfect"

Giving up, then, in my opinion, is sometimes a viable and expedient option.

Neither the Microsoft Office application suite, nor any of its
individual component applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access,
Outlook, etc.), have _ever_ been "part" of *any* Windows operating
system. They are, and always have been, separate applications, that
must be purchased and installed separately.

Microsoft Office comes pre-installed on new computers only when the
computer manufacturer chooses to offer it, and the purchaser is willing
to pay extra for it.

Not true.

Microsoft *never* names any of their software or programs with confusing
names.

Does this relative get a motel when they really meant a motel room?

Does this relative get a Dairy Queen when they really meant an ice cream
cone?

Does this relative refer to all tennis shoes as Keds, all blue jeans as
Levis and all facial tissue as Kleenex?

Is this relative related to my Dad?
