There you have it. The answer from a Microsoft MVP. Maybe a more specific
question to supplement Saqib's is, "Is there a way via GPO to have XP clients
release their IP addresses at shutdown?

hehe...no. I mean is there a setting that we can change via Group Policy to
have our clients release their IP addresses at shutdown?

No, but you can do it in a shutdown script.

This is cool! THE Kelly from Kelly's Korner. I have used your site in the
past. Saqib and I work for a big company. One of our CCIEs wants Windows to
release leases on shutdown. So, we need to implement this from the DHCP
server more than likely as there is a registry key to to this but it exists
under the interface registry key (which is generated when the NIC is added to
the system during mini-setup).

lends some insight as how to do this server-side.
