Probably a dumb question. Has scanreg been replaced by the system
restore routine or some other routine? If not, can it be run from the
start/run box and would it rebuild the register?

Thanks

It's called the registry.

scanreg.exe was available with Windows 98 & Me.

scanreg.exe has never been available on an NT operating system. Windows XP
is really NT 5.1.

No scanreg. The "NT" registry requires no maintenance.

Well it is better than the Windows 9x registry but there are still
registry related problems with Windows XP that require an extremely
convoluted and time consuming process to fix but would be a "piece of
cake" if Windows XP had scanreg or some functional equivalent.

See for example the procedures for recovering from a corrupted XP
registry at http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=307545 and compare that
with the Windows 9x equivalent which is scanreg /restore.
