Does Internet Connection Sharing really work?
If it does why doesn't anybody answer any of the posts
about it?

Can anybody provide links to setting it up properly after
it changes your IP address to 192.168.0.1 and the
computers cannot share files or access each other.

I've written a web site that should help you get everything working:

Please post any reply as a follow-up message in the news group

They work for me, although it took a lot of jumping
through hoops to get it working. XP doesn't follow the
logic I'm used to seeing. If you've messed with any
network settings (as I had done - royally), or the wizard
has, you may need to restore these to defaults. That's
what did it for me.

I've also had to redo sharing a number of times, and
there are a number of old (and now bogus) "files" showing
up. I'm not sure exactly how to get rid of them, so I
just go in via the Windoze Explorer NETWORK>ENTIRE
NETWORK>MICROSOFT NETWORK PLACES><workgroup><other-
computer> route.

Hope this helps.

Yes it works if configured correctly.
Try Start > Help > Search > Internet Connection Sharing

Thanks for the reply.

1) I don't understand why they can't just use the
existing IP address for the ICS computer but I guess
there must be a reason.

2) Below is a reply from a MSFT

My questions:
1) What do you conifigure your router to be and what IP
address. Is the router a client of the ICS computer and
does it get a DHCP address from the ICS computer or does
it have a static IP address.
2) Communication needs to take place from the client
computer through the router to the ICS computer. How is
the client setup to do this?

Reply from MSFT:
ICS uses the 192.168.0.x network and this cannot be
chnaged. Your ICS host will automatically be set for
192.168.0.1 and your clients (which need to be
configured to get their IP setting automatically) will
get addresses in the 192.168.0.x range, a default gateway
of 192.168.0.1 and DNS server of 192.168.0.1.

Thank you for the reply

Yes that is a very good article and I had actually seen
it before. I also went through the windows xp help on
internet connection sharing and don't remember anything
about it changing the IP address.

Questions:
1) What do I configure the router to be and what IP
address.
2) You recommend using the Network wizard to configure
the client - have not had much luck with the wizard.
3) How does the client communicate through the router to
the ICS computer now.

Comment:
I don't understand why it can't just use the existing IP
address - even though the router and clients are
configured for DHCP, the clients hold on (save in some
config info) the two IP address 192.168.1.100 and
192.168.1.101 because they get the same ones no matter
which computer is booted first.

From your article:
WARNING #1: When you enable ICS, the network adapter
connected to the local area network is assigned a static
IP address of 192.168.0.1. The client computers are
assigned other IP addresses in the 192.168.0.x range.
These addresses may not be compatible with an existing
network
