I'd like to have a software that everytime a usb flash drive is mounted,
check if exist a specific file and then execute a batch/program/...

I want to give my parents a USB pen whose insertion could start Opera,
start internet, close others software,...

Any advice ?

Simon

Hi S. You could try creating `Shortcuts` to the programs, and put them on
the pen. I haven`t tried this myself yet, but I think it should work. Make
sure you name the Scuts so they can recognise them. ..J

Do you mean something like an autorun CD?

Do you mean something like an autorun CD?

Also (but my old computer hasn't that bios option).

Something like a user recognition: I've tried to teach my parents to use
my computer to visit their bank site, but there are so many
variables/things to do for a novice (start computer, understand when
it's ready, TotalCommander nagware on startup, start the internet
connection, run the proper browser [I've created a modified version of
Opera with big fonts, but doesn't start internet connection
automatically...]...moreover I often use the "Suspension mode" of W2000,
so at startup can be opened whichever software (e.g. Emule that heavily
slow down the computer....).

So, I thought to do some batch programs to close everything but what
they need to navigate easily (I could do also a menu to choose from).

The problem is decide the "starting spark": inserting the usb flash key
could be an option (they can think to it as a normal "key" to insert); a
floppy inserting doesn't generate an event (I don't want a silly program
that always check floppy 24/24 hr)....

Yes, if it's not possible I'll think about a software version (a
keyboard combination, an icon somewhere on the desktop, but it appears
to me more complicated: some programs "stole" some key-combination, I
have a keyboard with some double functions [depending on the state of a
particular key], my desktop is already a chaos, and so the quick bar
launch [and this is too small for my parents' eyes....].
Neither I want create a different user account (after suspension mode,
the system start with the last user account).

In few words, I'm looking for a method to start a program at the USB
insertion (I know some of delphi programming: I accept advices also
about this language).

Thanks!

Simon

It would be much simpler if you just put all the neded shortcuts o the
desktop and give them very descriptive names.

Google comes up with "Autorun USB"

Any good?

Nice find, Stephen... And it even works if you just copy the two .EXE and
..HLP files to your favorite stand-alone portable utilities folder and
uninstall the application. Thanks!

I'm all for getting people of all ages to be comfortable in using the benefits
of the internet but if your parents are unable to even understand how to operate
your computer I would have thought the security risk involved in encouraging
them to visit their bank online could be disastrous.

I agree, but their bank account doesn't permit to make payments online.
By the way, I've told them to do their navigation possibily under my
supervision! (I'm worried also about my computer!! Like the wise said:

P.S. Interesting also the register method and USB autorun ...
