with previous editions of windows I have used a tape
backup with veritas software and could not ever get a
complete backup to restore correctly, I always ended up
having to reinstall all the programs but could save the
date.
with xp backup using an asr disk and system backup is it
possible to restore the disk to the previous backup
without having to reinstall all the programs and drivers.
Does it work?

To do what you're asking, you'll need an imaging program like Norton Ghost
or PowerQuest's Drive Image. With these, you can create a full backup of
your system as an image and if need be, restore your system back to
*exactly* the same way later. Backup software like veritas and the built in
backup facilty in XP don't work 100% like an image does!
