Does anyone know how to use \# field switch for float $

I would like to format a merge field with a floating $. Example
mege filed content 123.45 should print $123.45, but if the content is 12.34
want to see $12.34 not $ 12.34.

Try \# $#.##

Or if the sum runs into thousands ... or more

\# "$,0.00"
