Does anyone know how to turn off Outlook 2000 read receipts?

This is driving me crazy at work with all the spammers and non-delivery
reports. The option is under tracking but it is grayed out. There must be
a registry entry somewhere.
Thanks,
JB

When using Outlook with Exchange, the option does not exist to allow you to
configure receipts. You can fool the receipts on read receipts but you
cannot turn off delivery receipts. To fool the read receipts, turn off the
option to mark mail as read in the preview pane and then use the preview
pane for reading your mail. If you delete it, a receipt goes back saying
the mail was deleted without being read. Just move the mail to a folder for
items with read receipts and don't delete them.

I have Outlook 2002 SP-1 and am also starting to have problems with
receipts going out without my knowledge to spammers. How do you stop
receipts if a standalone Outlook, not using an Express system? I have
looked through every option I can find...

Thanks, Bob

Tools->Options->Email Options->Tracking Options.

You can also use a program called WatchYourBack! that will strip read
receipts and let you configure how you want to deal with receipts. It also
offers extensive attachment blocking configuration settings. It is pretty
cheap at ~$12 or so. And they now have a version that works with Outlook
2003 as well.

Hmmm. Been there, lots of times. It is set for "never send a response"
but I am still getting emails from my ISP that the target mailbox is
full. This has happened a couple of times this week, with to different
email IDs. I am positive that I did not read the emails or respond in
any way - just delete them.

Wait, just a thought. I am using Nortin Anti-Virus and its spam
checker would probably already be opening the email before I can even
delete it. Could that be where the response is being generated?

Thanks, Bob

are you sure they are read receipts? they could be NDRs caused by mydoom
and are out of your control.

Thanks Milly. I actually tried that and it works in the way you said. To
address the original issue, I know there are a couple solutions: 1) Disable
the sending of Read Receipts at the Exchange 2000 level (only stops outgoing
receipts). 2) A number of after market products out there can block/turn
off incoming Internet read receipts. Someone mentioned a .ADM file that can
be applied through group policy. I run a Native 2000 domain with Win2k or
greater clients and figured policy was the way to go.
I found this link and will pursue it:

If anyone can think of anything else I'd appreciate it.
