We have many documents with a template on a server that
doesn't exist anymore.
Using Word 2003 or Word XP times out trying to open the
docs. Using Word 2002 the doc opens after a few minutes.

We have unchecked "Update automatic links at open" but
this makes no difference

Any ideas please

You need to change the template to which these documents
think they are attached (Tools/Templates and Addins, box at
the top). If the template is in a different server
location, attach it to that. Otherwise, attach it to
Normal.dot

Yes but the problem is that the document hangs waiting to
Use the version of Word where it opens quickly. Or recreate
the server temporarily, copy the templates back to the
expected path, then open and change the documents.

There is no way to get around doing this.

Cindy thanks for your help
This is absolutely pathetic of Microsoft - this sort of
thing really annoys me - there should be a work
around/check box to ignore templates

thanks

Microsoft has a Hotfix available for this problem. You might try
obtaining it and see if it works:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=823372

If in the US call 800-936-4900 (press 3 for hotfixes) tell them you
are calling to obtain the Hotfix described in KB 823372 and they
should have it sent to you in a matter of minutes.

If outside the US then see http://microsoft.com/worldwide to obtain a
phone number.
