Documents from other companies

Sometimes when I receive at Word-document from other companies, it takes
several minutes to open.
Typically these documents are based on specific templates (and place for the
template), used by the company in question.

When I delete the reference to such a template (my own normal.dot is added)
and save the document, then I have no problem opening this document.
So it seems that Word - when opening the "foreign" document - tries to find
the template that it is based upon, and that can take several minutes.

Can anyone help me avoid this waste of time??

By the way: I use ThinkPad T30, Windows XP and until now Office 2000. I have
now upgraded to Office 2003, but the problem remains.

Unfortunately the behavior you describe is built into Word documents.
Ordinarily I don't think Word takes several minutes to figure out the
template is missing, but it can take that long if the templates were
originally on a network share. At least you know how to fix the problem
once the file does finally open. You might be able to avoid the problem
if you can get the companies you work with to send you their specific
templates, and you put them in the User Templates directory on your hard
drive.

Thanks for your answer.
Yes, the template in question is originally on a network share at another
company.
The strange thing is that my collegues' computers don't have the problem.
Here the document opens right away - and they have the same setup in Word.

I think the issue is not so much whether the original template was on a
network share as whether or not you are connected to a network when you try
to open it. If Word has the entire network to search for the missing
template rather than just your hard drive, it will take much longer.
