Document won't open

Many times when I attempt to open a blank document from
Start, Open New Document, then select Blank Document, my
Word does not start and I have to close the process. In
order to open a document, I have to select Start,
Documents and then select a previous document that I had
open. Once that it open, then I can select a new blank
document. This may also happen if I try and open a
specific document within a folder.

I am running Word 2002 version 10.6612.6626 SP3. I have
checked for any updates by my verison says it is up to
date. Any suggestions?

Suzanne,

Thank you for the link to helpful items. Unfortunately,
I tried each of them and it still does not work properly.

What happens if you type "winword" (without the quotation marks) in the
Start | Run box? If you can start Word this way, it should open with a blank
document loaded. If this works, use Start | Search to look for winword.exe.
When you have found it, create a shortcut and drag it to your desktop or
Start menu or Quick Launch bar and use that to start Word.

If you *can't* start Word this way, then can you start it using "winword
/a"? If so, then the problem is likely in a corrupted Normal.dot template.
The article I referred you to gives instructions on renaming Normal.dot to
correct that.
