Document that will not close in Word

When I open Word a letter appears which I can't remove. I can delete but it
reappears each time word is opened. When I try to delete from C drive dialog
says file is being used by Word. This first appeared in Office 1997. I have
installed Office 2003 and same document appears on screen of new version of
Word when it is opened.
