document not readable

Whenever I try to open a document using word (for example I am trying to open
a document that describes shore excursions on a cruise line), the document
isn't readable. It is just characters and numbers rather than normal
English. I have tried troubleshooting. I have used tools, options, the
general tab and made sure that "confirm conversion at open" was checked. I
have used the "other encoding" box and nothing seems to help. How do I make
the documents readable? thank you.

This sounds as if something on your machine has "gone bad". Two things to try:

1. Locate the Normal.dot template and rename it to NormalOLD.dot. Try now.

2. Uninstall, then reinstall the Word application.
