Document Map not updating

I'm using the Document Map to navigate through the book I'm working on.
However, I've noticed (it seems more and more), the Document Map is ignoring
new headings I've added. Sometimes they seem to show up eventually. The last
few I added (days ago now), have still not appeared in the Map.

The TOC, which uses the same heading information, seems to update correctly
when I right click and select Update Field | Update entire table.

Is there a similar way for me to force the Document Map to update (nothing
happens when I right-click on the Document Map)? Is there a way to get it to
automate correctly? If no to both of those, is there work-around?

Thanks,
Colin

Hi Colin,

You unfortunately don't mention the version of Word, so I'm not sure what
features are available to you...

I'd try round-tripping the document through HTML or RTF format. And if that
doesn't work, copy/pasting all but the last paragraph mark into a new document.

Sorry, I'm using Word 2003, with all the patches, on Windows XP, SP2.

I don't dare export the document and back - it is chock full of OLE links
and internal cross references. The document map is far less important to me
than the integrity of my document. It's just that I thought the Document Map
feature was a convenient way to quickly jump to any heading. I'm up to 200+
pages by now, and frequently need to jump around to check for internal
consistency. Document Map seemed the best way to do that.

Hi Colin,
Sorry, I'm using Word 2003, with all the patches, on Windows XP, SP2.
In that case, definitely try a round-trip to HTML or XML format. Don't worry
about the OLE and links and stuff, round-trip means round-trip: nothing should
be lost (except, with any luck, damaged structures). And besides, you'd be
creating a COPY of the document (using File/Save As), so you'd still have the
original.

If the document map is not updating correctly, and this isn't a question of
system resources, then it is a warning sign that there may be something wrong
in the document structures that could later result in data loss. I strongly
advise you to try the round-trip route.

Thank you. I also figured out another solution. If I just right click below
the list (I may have to close outline levels or scroll down to get below the
list), I can have it recalculate by selecting a numeric outline level (e.g.,
Show Level 2). This also works.

It's not obvious, because unless you scroll down below the map, right click
does nothing. There is no indication that you need to scroll below the map
to be able to right-click.
