When opening a Word 97 document by double-clicking on the
document in My Documents, I receive an error saying that
the document is already open. If I open it from within
Word, I do not receive the error. The same thing is
happening in Excel 97 with .xls files.

We recently upgraded to a new system, a P4, XP Pro.
Outlook 2000 is installed, so I'm having a difficult time
with trying to download any updates, as they are for
Office 2000...

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Pete Maddox

Purely on the grounds it won't do any harm, I would re-register
both word and excel.

Being a simple yeoman only capable of plain talk and not having
the capacity for either artifice or lies, I do freely admit that
the instructions, set away from everything else, in parentheses,
capital letters, and quotated:

' ("TRY TYPING WINWORD /R AT THE START | RUN PROMPT IN WINDOWS.")

are not mine, but those of a current Microsoft MVP.

If the above doesn't work then I submit this solution as original
as I've yet to see an MVP use it. However, on the grounds that
the instruction can do irreparable damage to your system, I only
recommend it to guild members of the pathologically impatient
or fellows of the Institute of the terminally clueless (both
colleges of which I'm a proud member of):

1) Log on as an administrator.

2) From a command prompt change to the directory where you
installed microsoft office and issue the following command:

c:\Program Files\Microsoft Office>cacls * /t /e /g Everyone:F

This'll dismantle any defensive walls protecting your office programs
(including templates, macros and executables) and most probably have
other nasty side effects. Of course by cocking-up the security
in XP, you should have no trouble downloading any updates, viruses,
trojan horses, etc.

yours sincerely

very satisfied with my retrofitted windows 98 security
on my windows 2000 box.

PS I've selflessly answered three posts in the last week and I've
been good most of today, can I please have an MVP certificate.
