doc opening error in xp office 2003

I received a word doc in Word 2000 format as an email attachment
On trying to open the doc I get the error message "can't open document" check permissions etc

If I email a doc to myself created in XP office word 2003 it opens just fine

Has anyone got an idea what the problem is

I would appreciate any advise

Seeing the exact error message would help...

My best guess is that the document may not have closed down correctly, and is looking for some
temp files. Or it might be damaged.

The person who sent it to you should
- try opening it again on their system
- if it opens, use File/Save As to save it to a new file name
- ZIP it (that will protect it against damage in transmission)
- attach and send it

You'll need to unzip it, of course, before you can (hopefully) open it in Word.
