.doc file extensions

I have owned my new windows vista operating system for a few months.
I have recently recieved some e-mail with a attachment. This attachment
is a .doc file extension. My computer will not open the file. What can I do
to solve this problem?
 
Hi,

Make sure that attached file has not double extension e.g. name.doc.exe or
name.doc [many spaces] .src with standard DOC file icon. If has got, the
file probably was opened and your machine can be infected by an malware.

Just to add to what has been posted, be sure to scan the attachment with
your antivirus software before opening the file. You might first have to
save the attachment to another location, then either point your antivirus to
the file and scan it or if your antivirus uses a shell extension, you can
right click the file and click scan from the right click context menu.
