Here is what I would like to do, I hope you can
tell me how to do it. I have a form, it has places for filling
in information, (name, date, amounts) it likewise has boxes
that needed to be filled in with amounts (numbers). I have
"installed" the form into the computer by way of a scanner/printer
but now that I have in 'in' the computer how do I ""fill in the needed
information"""
The first thing that came into my mind, is using an old typewriter
we have put up in the closet,(Underwood) but I know there has
got to be a way,,,, I think??????? Would appreciate any and all
help. Please don't take anything for granted,,,,,,,, please "talk
s l o w cause I am dumber than a stick. thanks in advance.

What do you want to do with the file: fax it or use it as a template?

A scanned document will be converted to a graphic file (*.tiff or other)
that does not allow you to paste/type anything. The work around is to open
it in a graphics program that allows you to edit that file: paste some text
or graphic 'patch' in the necessary form fields. You might have to convert
to another format - jpeg, bmp. Easier is to scan the filled form - or a
filled copy of it.

If you want to make a template, guess you'll have to make it by hand - in
Word, for ex.

Depending on the type of form, you may be able to accomplish this with some
OCR (object character recognition) software. It will be very tedious and the
method will depend on the software you have.

Your scanner may have come with some sort of OCR program bundled. If so, it
is probably very basic and you may or may not have any success with it. If
you are only doing one copy of the form, you may want to either fill it in
by hand or dig out the old typewriter.

LOL, JAX

That should have been one version, not one copy. Of course, once you have
one version, you can copy all you want.

You can use an image editing application to paste the info into your form.
Scan the image with a .jpg image.
A really good free one is Irfran

If you are really dumber than a stick, getting the old Underwood out of the
closet might be a quicker solution.
If you want to use the typewriter, scan and print out a copy of the
original. Then use the copy to input the requested form answers. Scan the
copy with the input and either print the results or send as an attachment or
fax.

Yeah,
I remember doing that once years ago - using OCR to convert a .tiff to Word.
The problem was that I did not have the same fonts as in the original form.
On the other hand, the file didn't have any empty fields. I do not see how
OCR would read those and/or convert to .doc or .pdf.

One way to do this is using WordPerfect Office. I am sure you can do it
in Word to. Take the scanned in form and make it a watermark on the
WordPerfect document, that is you insert it in the page as a graphic in
the background. Then use advance codes to move the cursor around the
screen to locations that overlay the blanks in the form where
information should go. Type in the information, save the document and
print it out.

It is a time consuming process initially getting the spacing right, but
then save it as a template and use it again.

There is special form creation and completion software available though
I don't have any experience with it. In other words there is no easy
way to do what you want, especially for a beginner.

How do I convert a jpeg file-(text) to a Word Document? I recentl
scanned some literature and saved it as a jpeg file. I emailed it t
myself, and now I can only open it as a picure.
Thank you in advance.

Print it out and scan it with an OCR application.

A Jpeg file is a graphical format. You can insert it into a document,
but you can't open it as text.

You need to run it through OCR (Optical Character Recognition)
software.

If you convert it to a TIF Microsoft Office XP or later can OCR it. See Microsoft Office Document Imaging on your Start Menu. Use Paint to save as TIFF.

If you save it as .tiff you can OCR it without having to print it first.
Your fax software might have an OCR that allows you to save it as text.
Michael

Thank you again for all of your input. I have now saved my informatio
in a .tiff format. I think I may need to buy the OCR software, as I ca
't find it on my XP---anywhere.

Dear David,
I found Microsoft imaging, as this is how I converted my jpeg to
.tiff; however, I still need to use the OCR to edit my scanne
information as text. As .tiff only allows me to edit it as a picture
unless I am doing something wrong. At least I don't have to rescan i
though, which was helpful. Thank you.
I found this website called Cognitive Enterprises, located in Cort
Madera, CA, they have a free OCR download trial. Hopefully they are o
the up and up, I am waiting to download, until I can actually speak t
someone at their offices, first...
Thanks again,

Samanth

Microsoft Office Document Imaging (I don't know what you mean by Microsoft Imaging) is an OCR application. It only reads TIFFs (Do you mean Microsoft Office Document Scanning? it doesn't convert either, perhaps Microsoft Paint or Photo Editor or Imaging For Windows) so you didn't use it to convert to jpeg. File menu - Send Text To Word.

David,

The Short of it:
I am slow on the uptake, but I finally got it. I OCR'ed my scanne
images and sent the file to Word. Sorry for my difficulty i
communicating my actions.
Thanks again for your help
