do I need XP licence - orig machine now junk

Had a faulty Dell 250N notebook - after great frustration
and lack of support I trashed it!

Now about a year later, I have a new desktop with no OS
and would like to install XP (originally installed and
activated on the original machine that is in a dump
someplace).

you will need the product number to activate new computer.
also if the original computer is OEM the OS can not be
moved to other computer. OEM's are tied to the hardware
it is mounted. check the "help/about" button for OEM in
serial number.
 
Sorry....your Dell OEM license will only permit installation
and activation on the Dell computer it was shipped with.

Greetings --

Assuming a retail license (OEM licenses are not transferable),
simply remove WinXP from the computer it is currently on, and install
it onto the new one. If it's been more than 120 days since you last
activated that specific Product Key, you'll most likely be able to
activate via the Internet without problem. If it's been less, you
might have to make a 5 minute phone call.
