When I switched to Windows XP, I went ahead and bought a
firewall which needs to be updated and paid for annually,
I think, like the virus protection does. Then later I
noticed that a firewall was included in XP, but from what
I can tell, it's only for LAN (whatever that is) and
dialup. I connect using satellite (direcway). SO, can I
utilize the one that's included with my XP? Will it be
effective?

XP firewall is OK for normal use. I dont think it matters which type of
connection you have. Satellite is as good as Cable.

It has its limitations: It protects against incoming traffic but not
outgoing traffic: it does not notify when something in you machine tries to
connect outside world. Also its configurability and logging capability is
very basic compared to other products.

However, there are other free firewalls available that provide you higher
configurability and control. Free ZoneAlarm is recommended.

If you never had to configure your firewall => XP firewall is OK for you
If you want to be told which applications from your PC contact outside world
=> get Zonealarm (u can use it together with XP firewall.)
If you tweak things around a lot with your current firewall => you would
want to keep it.

Thanks for the info. I'm a computer illiterate basically
and mostly use the computer for ebay and email. I once
got a message that something was trying to access
whatever and I didn't have a clue as to what to do. I
just want to know that nobody can come into my computer
and get information. I guess you'd call it a very basic
need. Also, do you know if XP provides virus
protection? I get a little thing that pops up in the
bottom right hand corner every so often that says
something's been updated. I spent big money for Norton
and now I'm getting a message that I've got to pay again
for it. What do you know about this?
