Do I Lose Files if I Reinstall Windows XP?

I have lost (or corrupted) my System file in the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG area of my system. The system will not reboot. I have tried Knowledge Base article 823614 to no avail. My question is if I attempt to reinstall Windows XP, will I lose all my other applications and files?
 
If you dont have then backed up you will. Have you tried the
reinstall-repair option? That way you wont lose your files. Mike
