How do I know...
under add/remove programs I have

"Windows XP Hotfix (SP2) Q814995"
"Windows XP Hotfix (SP2) Q819616"

but on the microsoft site it says "get ready for it", meaning that it isn't
out? I'm confuzed, how do all the people on here have it already? they're
not all beta testers are they?

I ask this because I see i have somthing that says SP2, and all the people
here have it installed.. so im not sure if i have it or not, but on the
microsoft site about the firewall
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/security/internet/sp2_wfintro.mspx
i want to turn it on but i can't seem to find anything that looks remotly
close to what they have pictured there as the new firewall... i just have
the old one which doesn't work for LAN file sharing how can i get this?

Then you don't have SP2 installed.

Right-click on My Computer then select Properties. What does it say in
the General section? If it doesn't say Service Pack 2 (SP2) that you
don't have it. Now, what you are seeing is the fact that some of the
incremental "hotfix" updates were categorized as SP2.

If you cannot wait for the single-user release, then just download and
install the 262MB (+/-) IT version, as many of us have done. Here is
the link to the download:

http://download.microsoft.com/downl...0-73cf11fdcdf8/WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe

I installed SP2 on two desktops and two laptops here at home, and on
two computers at the office. All went smoothly on my side.

No - you will need SP - when an update come next week or whenever they
find another flaw after SP2 you will see "Windows Hotfix (SP3) Q######"

PsyB

Those are patches that are includes in SP-2, they are not SP-2.

SP-2 is out, depending on your exact configuration determines when you
get SP-2.
Do you have Automatic Update enabled?
Right click My Computer
Click Properties
Click Automatic Update button
Check as desired.
