My computer is a mess. I cannot access the internet, its
running very slowly, I have strange pop-ups such as
Norton anit virus saying it cant run the messenger
scanner, this while I have it disabled! I have gotten
virus updates from symantec and run a scan but theres a
couple of files it says it cant scan, and Ive scanned
from a boot disk. So I tried reinstalling winxp for the
missing or misconfigured files my pc tells me about but
got "setup failed to install the product catalogs. This
is a fatal error" and "setup failed to remove remove
product catalog signature for winxp upgrade is invalid
error 426, but Im not upgrading. A friend using my pc was
d/l files from net and disabled my anti virus 'cause the
site said to, this is where things all started SOMEBODY

Stop!

Do a restore to a point when your PC was working fine. Go
back at least a week. This will take some time but will
be well worth your sanity. You won't lose any files but
if installed other software between the current date and
restore point, this will be lost and must be reinstalled.

Good luck.

p.s. When restoring be very patient during the bootup
period. Your system may appear to hang and then load all
at once.

I had a similar problem. Showed up upon reinstalling Windows.
Do a search for DLLHOST.EXE There should be one copy in
Windows\system32. A copy anywhere else contains a virus.
I had 5 of them on my system; don't know where they came from
but they showed up immediately after installing XP Pro. Might have
been an early Christmas present from Windows Update. If you delete the
copy in Windows\system32, Windows will restore it automatically.

If you don't get them all they seem to replicate themselves.

Do you have a virus? YES! Windows is a virus.
