Do all drivers get files in the same place?

Hi

Not necessarily. Which drivers, in particular, are you referring to? Graphics and sound drivers may be installed into their own folder.

Hi

Have a look in Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager. Expand the + next to your monitor, right click on it, select Properties>Driver tab>Driver Details...

I know that this sounds crazy but when I do what you suggested I find that
device manager doesn't even have monitors listed as a category. This is in
line with using the troubleshooter & finding that everything is grayed out.
It seems as if I have some default driver listed that it doesn't want me to
change. I can't recall ever installing software for the monitor before but
indeed it might have happened. In any event I have used this laptop I'm
typing this on to download a driver for the monitor in question. The only
problem is that device manager won't let me change the driver because it
doesn't have one listed to delete first. Where do I go from here?

You may not have a monitor driver installed. It's not always essential and
probably won't make any noticeable difference.
Look on the monitor manufacturer's website for a driver.
