Do a Repair

For some sorry situation seems I have developed some problems with WINXP,
hoping not my fault. Can't seem to resolve them. From a post I have in this
thread on condition is not being able to run defrag, seems the whole folder
is corrupted because even top line menu responds very very slowly if not at
all. My monitor screen has been also corrupted with shades of the same color
in the background, this happened after doing SFC SCANNOW hoping it would
correct the defrag problem. Sorry for the tirade. How much of a hassle is it
to do a repair install, I am not a newbee, maybe better then an average
novice. Would it correct problems, would I lose anything, some programs I
may be able to replace, others of no consequence, MS MONEY lost or corrupted
would send looking for bottle of valium.

Tried to re-install ViewSonic software it seems the installation is stopped
by a MS program titled DEP.

Any Help appreciated.

As for your issues it is very difficult to know if a Repair Install will fix
them. It is always prudent to back up essential data on a regular basis and
it is very important to ensure critical data is backed up before attempting
any type of repair. Typically a Repair Install will not affect your data or
installed programs but you should be aware that on occasion a repair install
doesn't go well either because it is done incorrectly, the system is not
properly prepared or there is hardware damage..

Before resorting to a Repair Install you may wish to try a few other things
if you haven't already.
First do a thorough spyware and virus scan cleaning out what is found.
Running your anti-spyware software from Safe Mode is a good idea.
Second ensure you have the latest drivers for your video card.
Running diagnostic software for memory and hard drive can be a good idea.
You can typically get hardware diagnostic software from the hardware
manufacturer's site but be careful with it and ensure you have a backup of
your important data first. You may wish to do a software check of the system
memory too. Bad memory can be the source of a lot of frustration. Here is a
tool you can use to create a bootable floppy or CD to run a check on your

In addition to Harry's post, here is a link to instructions on how to do a
repair install. No it is not difficult, and should retain programs and
data. All the updates from windows update issued after the SP2 level your
XP installation CD will need to be reapplied. Make sure you have a full and
complete backup of important data. You should always have this. Whether a
repair install will help you it's hard to say. If the issue is hardware
related or malware it won't.

Just for drill, you might want to try rolling back the video card driver.
Sometimes new driver updates do funny things. Just a thought.
