How do you turn on DMA to a device in win-xp pro? I know
how to do it in win98 but I do not see it in xp.

Thank You Sammy Castagna

Sammy,

Unlike earlier versions of Windows, XP enables DMA for most devices
(including optical drives) by default. So it's usually not necessary to
manually enable it.
However, if you have good reason to believe that it's not been turned on for
one of your IDE devices:

Right-click on the My Computer icon in the Start menu and from the context
menu select "Manage". When the "Computer Management" window appears, click
once on the "Device Manager" entry in the left-hand pane, and in the
right-hand pane a list of the device types on your PC should appear.

Double-click on the entry "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers" to expand it, and
underneath you should see entries for "Primary IDE Channel" and "Secondary
IDE channel".
For each of these channels in turn:
Double-click on them to bring up the Properties dialog. Click on the
Advanced Settings tab, and you should see two "Device" sections,
corresponding to the Master and Slave devices on the cable for that channel.
If you only have one drive on that channel, the second Device entry will be
greyed out.
To enable DMA, set the "Transfer Mode" to "Use DMA if available". Then click
OK.

Thanks David
