DIY Patterns ?

Is it possible to make one's own patterns for object fills ? I'd like t
make one if possible, rather than using a texture or picture.

I created something quick in Paint (*.bmp file) and used
it to fill a square.

Go into Format AutoShape > Fill > Fill Effects > Picture
Tab > Select Picture.

I appreciate that's possible, however I'd specifically prefer to be
able to make my own patterns. Can anyone tell me how to do this ?
