I have over 700 address contacts that have been "tagged"
into various categories. I know how to set up a new
distribution group. However, when I choose "select names"
the names from my list apear as first name, last name
instead of last name , first name. This makes it almost
impossible to scroll up and down looking for the name I
want to select and add to my distribution group. Please
advise of any suggestions.

In Outlook XP, select Tools, Options, then click Contact Options. Change the
Default File Order to Last, First.

No. That won't change the Address Book.
Go to Tools > E-mail accounts > View or change existing directories or
address books > Outlook Address Book > Change. > Set your sort order there

In Outlook XP & 2003:
Click Tools
Select View or Change Existing Directories or Address Books
Click Next
Highlight your Outlook Address Book (if there's more than one)
Click Change

You'll see two options under "Show names by" - 'First Last' and 'File as'.
The default 'File as' order is Last, First. To check this (and change it if
necessary):
Click Tools
Click Options
Click Contact Options
Look for the "Default File as order" - pick the order you want from the drop
down list.

Hope this helps!

Mike

If I am reading the original post correctly, the request is to have the
column of names in the distribution list displayed in the LastName,
FirstName format. The solutions offered thus far set the format for
displaying names only within the Outlook Address Book.

That depends on the version in which the DL was created. The solution I
posted works for some versions. In others, users actually have to modify the
Subject field of the Contact.
