dissapearing windows

I'll use an example to describe my problem; If I open something from control panel it seems to dissapear almost immediately. It allows anywhere from 1 to 5 seconds of time to work with it, then with out warning it shuts itself down
This problem seems to be consistent with all windows associated with system settings, etc..
Is there something obvious I'm missing here?

If this has to do with Display, etc. run this edit: Line 285 (right hand
side)
