display reverts to low bit color setting after rebooting

After selecting 16 or 32 bit color, system reverts to low
bit setting when system reboots. Up to date virus scan
shows no virus. [Had the Sasser worm a month ago!]. All XP
updates are installed. Any ideas before attempting
reinstall of XP?
