Hi,
Having to share the Internet with my flatmates, now I access it through a
Gateway.
However, when opening the 'network connectons' (from 'Contol Panel'),
windows does not always display the 'internet gateway' and I would like to
know how I can access it when this happens.
Could someboby help me, please?
Thanks

What do you mean "access it"? If you have a router (and I assume that's
what you've got to share the Internet), you normally configure the
router in a browser. Enter the router's IP address into your browser's
addressbar. Refer to the router manual or website or more details.

Hi, Malke! You are right. I was not clear enough.

Lets see if I can explain myself. Sometimes, when I open the 'network
connectons' (from 'Contol Panel'), windows displays not only the 'local area
connection', the 'wireless network connection' and the '1394 connection' but
also the 'internet gateway'. I would like windows to display always the
'internet gateway'. So I can change its settings.

Hope this is clearer,

Thank you, it is clearer but I still don't know why you would want to
change the gateway's settings from there. What are you really trying to
accomplish?

Hi, M!

What I want to do is just to open and close some ports, so the Emule works
better. The gateway allocates me a different IP each time I swich on the pc,
so I have to change the IP on the ports.

How do you see it?

That's better - now we can actually give you some help. As I suspected,
you will want to make some changes in the router's configuration and
you will not do it from the "gateway" icon on your computer.

First, you will need to assign a static IP address to your computer if
you are forwarding traffic through the eMule ports to your machine.
Give your computer an IP address on the same subnet (naturally) but
outside the router's DHCP range. Do this by finding the TCP/IP settings
associated with your network adapter and changing the IP settings to a
specific address. Look in XP's Help & Support for details. Again, the
icon for the "gateway" is not involved in any way here.

Now go to the router's configuration utility. You will get to it by
entering the router's IP address into your browser's addressbar. Refer
to the router manual (or the mftr.'s website if you don't have a
manual) for details. Once you have logged into the router's
configuration utility, you can open the ports you need and forward
traffic over those ports to your computer's IP address.

Make sure this is OK with your flatmates that you are opening ports in
your security.
