Display icons on desktop as a list?

Hi.

I have a LOT of icons on my desktop and I prefer them not to be icons since
they take up room and longer names cannot be displayed.

I was wondering if someone could show me how to change the view settings of
the desktop to display the items as a list.

Thank you.

Why not have another folder on your desktop...stick in it the icons you dont
use very often and also set it to "detail" that way you get the best of both
worlds..A tidy desktop and your little used icons displayed as a list

Just drop a shortcut to the actual Desktop folder onto the desktop and
when you need to see it ordered, open it and put it in Detail view.

Thank you for your replies.

Everything suggested makes perfect sense and I have been using similar
methods for convenience and organization, but I was just wondering if the
desktop *could* actually be displayed as a list for the purpose of cleaner
appearence and a bit of elegance more fitting with my preference. If not, I
understand that functionally there are equivalent settings to get around it.

Again, I appreciate responses. If anyone does know of a way (perhaps via
third party programs?) to display the desktop as a list I would very much
like to know.

Thank you.
