Help, please.

I just bought a computer that was running Windows ME, then was upgraded to
Windows XP home, and I have a 40 GB HD with 128 mb memory. My computer is
showing that I only have 3 GB of free space left. Surely this is not
correct. When switched to XP, a disk format was done. Do I still have both
OS on my computer or am I just out of luck with the amount of memory left?

Try using Control panel -> administrative tools --> Computer management -->
Disk management and take a look at how the disk is partitioned and laid out.

I cannot tell you exactly what might have happened. However, Installing
winXP on a 40G disk will not leave you with only 3GB of free space. This is
true even if WinME was still installed.

My guess is that disk was partioned in to several partitions. (several
drive letters). You formatted and installed WinXP on one of these partition
and this partition has 3GB of space left

I checked and it looks to me that I only have two seperate partitions. One
that says it is for the C: drive and the other says it has 1.02 GB allocated.
I have deleted as much as I possibly can and I still only have 4.8 GB of
free space left. I have a FAT32 file system with only 13% free. Is there any
way of fixing this without reformatting the drive.

There are only two identities, I don't know if they are partitions or not
(I'm pretty new to this in-depth type of stuff.) I have deleted as much as I
can and it is still showing that I only have 4.8 GB of free space left. This
is a FAT32 file system and I only have 13% free. I can defrag, but that
won't improve my disk size.
