Hello All,

I believe I did a dumb thing. I ran a program on my PC called Zilla Data
Nuker. I ran the program to wipe my open areas of excess junk(Yes I made
sure it ran only for theopen areas). After the program finished. Everything
seemed to be running fine. I opened many files and folders and all seemed
well. I shut down for the night. When I booted up the next day I got a
"Disk Read Error" ctrl+alt+del. I rebooted several times to see if it would
come up which it did not. I am assuming this program may have shredded some
files in the boot area. What would be the best option to repair this
installation? Should I do a bootcfg/rebuild in recovery console, a repair
install, or is there a better way?

Thanks for Any Responses in Advance!

Hi Parker,

Before you perform repair installation or clean installation, I think
following steps are worth a try.

1. went to the registry key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E967-E325-11C
E-BFC1-0
8002BE10318} . There is a Lowerfilters string value is (0-length binary
value). Subkeys for this key are usually 0000 0001 and Properties.Backed
up the key, deleted the Lowerfilters string, and the extra subkeys 0002
thru 0008. Then try to reboot to see the efforts.

2. Since it seems to be a disk error, I think boot into Recovery Console to
run chkdsk should be necessary.About how to boot into Recovery Console,
please refer to following article:

Hope it helps.

Hello Vince,
I'm Afraid the disk must have gone bad very quickly. I couldnt even get to
the repair install screen. All other efforts failed for fixing the boot
problem. The error basically said the disk was corrupt and could not be
found in the repair effort. I have already replaced the HDD and will try to
slave the old drive to see if any info is still savable.

Thank You Again

Hi Parker,

I'm sorry to hear that your disk's corruption. But that explained why the
system continually gives out the error message "Disk Read Error". Anyway, I
hope everything goes well.

Thank you for using Microsoft Newsgroup.
