Today I fitted a hard drive with an existing installation of windows xp on
it onto a new motherboard and get Disk Read Error after the boot screen. I
ran the recovery console and chkdsk from the xpCD ROM and the windows
partion is recognized. I've tried auto, LBA all other options in the BIOS
for the hard drive configuration. Would re-writing the MBR be wise or could
this render the drive unreadable? Any help would be much appreciated.

Delete all partitions on the drive. Create new partitions. Format
partitions. Go from there.

I am trying to get it working without losing data. Going to put the drive
back into the old machine and copy data across to another partition then
reinstall XP over C if bootfix and mbr fix doesn't work. Thank you for the
advise.

Reinstalling, without repairing the defective partition, will give you the
same error. The way to repair it is as I have said.
