An error occurred preventing a boot-up of XP. The error
message is:
"A disk read error occurred"
"Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart"
My disk partioning software is able to read the folders
and files on the drive, but says I need to run chkdsk /f
to fix the disk problem. How do you run chkdsk on an NTFS
drive when you can't boot it???!!!

Hi Ed,

You boot the WinXP CD and load the Recovery Console, then run chkdsk /f from
the command prompt.

Tks Rick,

That worked and the hard drive is now booting.
Unfortunately the system restore feature is not allowing
me to roll-back to the OS settings prior to the problem
occurring in the first place. Any further ideas? Tks,

Ed

Hi Ed,

Then go forward. What sort of problem is it?

Unfortunately, once system restore gets messed up, all you can do is stop
and restart it. This loses all existing restore points, so it's kind of
useless for resolving this issue.
