I am using an HP 533 with WinXp, SP1, 2GHZ Celeron4, 256Meg Sdram and a
60Gig HD.

My question is whether that are limitations as to where I store programs
and related data within the partitions of my hard drive.

Specifically, can I put the programs like Wordpad or some other word
processing program on Drive C , while putting the documents I produce on
another partition, say Drive F ?
Or another example: Can I put the Windows and the I386 folders on drive C
while putiing the Documents and Settings folder on drive F ?
Another: Can I put my Windows Media Player on C:\ and put all my mp3 files
on F:\ ? etc etc etc.

Also, if I do decide to rearrange the folders/files on different
partitions. will I need to go to each program and reset options that
originally set the location of a particular programs data files ?

Can someone please enlighten me......and please tell me it will be
straightforward and easy instead of complicated and very messy or chaotic as
I fear it will be.

Thanks in advance for any help! Blisscat

Yes

No, but you can create a folder called that anywhere on the partitions you. The D&S installed folder cannot be moved because it is related to settings to accounts in that folder residing on the partition on which Windows is installed.

Yes, you just have to have Media Player search for your MP3s in that directory, they still will play.

Yes, you will have to direct the program(s) to target to the new directory, or it won't find it (them)

Why not leave well enough alone? Those that are just simply stand alone files can be moved and accessed on any partition, but programs are not so easily done, unless you install said program to that directory. All references for Windows to run them are placed in the System32 folder, if applicable to that case, when installed. You still can have the program itself directed to be installed to any partition/folder you please.

But if you want to move an installed program to another partition and then in, let's say another "Program Files" folder on that partition, you would need to go to the original installation folder in the C:\Program Files\Whatever-you-want-to-move, and copy and paste it into the new directory. Any shortcut you have like on your desktop, or in the All Programs list in the Start button, would then need to be changed to that directory. Right click on the Program in the list or on the shortcut, and under the shortcut tab, change the target to its new directory.

Hi to all

My Windows XP see my disk with letter D: and i tryed 'diskpart' command but can´t change the mount point in the system volume. I think that the way to solve the problem is some configuration in the boot, but i have no ideia how to do such thing! I some one have a tip..... please post it.

Hi,

.........But if you want to move an installed program........

You can't "move" an installed program. You'll need to uninstall it, then
reinstall it where you want it to be.

Not true, you can move the contents of the program's folder from the Programs Files folder to anywhere you please, the associated files that get installed into the Windows folder(s) cannot be moved. If one moves the files folder from within the Program Files folder natively listed in C: to wherever, they will have to change the target. I have done this numersous times.
