Are you talking about a different copy of Windows XP?
Normally changes can only be made to the registry that is currently in
use. If you have a multiboot configuration then you cannot easily
make changes to the registry that belongs to a different installation
of Windows.
It is technically possible, using advanced utilities such as LOADHIVE,
but doing so is something that should not be attempted unless you have
a great deal of expertise with regards to registry matters. I, for
one, would be extremely reluctant to attempt such a process unless
there was no possible alternative.
