The error message you're receiving indicates that either your drive is
not a DVD drive, or the Encarta 2004 disk is damaged. Since it's
unlikely a new disk would be damaged, check to see if your system
shows the drive as a DVD drive.

Open Control Panel, click on System, click on the Hardware Tab. Now
click on Device Manager. Open the Device tree by clicking on the plus
sign next to the listing of CD\DVD drives and see what it says. Post
it back here.

Have you cleaned it lately? Try a CD/DVD lens cleaner. Usually these are
available fairly cheaply from most department stores.

it tells me that i have two drives installed a cdrw and a LITEON DVD-ROM
LTD 163 which is correct . now can some one point me in the right direction
thanks

OK, that's fine. Before doing anything else, you might try cleaning
the drive as Rick suggested. Also, try this: From Device Manager,
right click on the Liteon DVD-Rom drive and select "properties".
Click on the "Region" tab and be sure the correct "Region " is
selected. Sometimes if a DVD is purchased outside one's home country,
the region the DVD is recorded for will be different. I'm assuming
you're posting from Ireland.... If the Encarta 2004 DVD was
purchased say, in the US, it would be setup for Region 1.

Other than that, I'm out of ideas what could be wrong with your drive.
