Hi,

Everytime I insert a blank disk in the drive it is unreadable, the error
reading ´this disc is not compatible´. It´s a standard CD-R disk and the
error is occurring when I try to format it - any clues?
Thanks.

Could be....

1. The disk itself is bad. Have you tried a known-blank disk? Right off
the spindle?
2. The drive is dirty. Consider a CD drive cleaner.
3. The CD drive is not working. Does it read files from a CD?

you can format (and re-format) a "re-writeable" CDRW, NOT an CD-R (write
once , or multisession).

some CDROM's will give the unreadable error UNTIL you burn something to the
disk.

if this is not the case , please give more details as to type of CDROM/CDR
you are trying to use...

I´ve tried a couple of different disks, albeit that they are exactly the
same.

My PC said it needed formatting so I tried that, now it is saying ´you don´t
have access to the D: drive, incorrect function´.

It plays DVD´s and PC games without a problem.

Thanks. I don´t know how to burn something onto it if I can´t access the
drive (pardon my ignorance!). I´ve tried copying document files to it but it
won´t let me.

The disk is a Millenium Recordable CD-R for Professionals, CD-R 700MB, High
Performance 52x. Am I using the wrong sort of disk?

I´ve managed to burn some music from iTunes, so perhaps I´m just not using
the correct disk type for soring documents.

Don't worry about the type of CD-R. They do not differ in the type of data
they can store. What software are you using to burn CD's?
PS: The part about formatting a CD-R mentioned above is true. CD-R's require
no formatting, and formatting attempts should not be attempted with
non-rewritable media.

it is not the "type" of CDR you are using , just the method you are using to
burn the CD is not recognized by win98.

using built-in burning software or third party (Nero ,etc.) ?

Try using an Imation or Verbatim CD, most burners should not have a problem
with either brand.

Actually, CD-Rs DO require formatting if you write to them using a
packet-writing app such as Roxio DirectCD or IBM's DLA. Because the OP
has successfully burned something, I suspect that the problem is neither
the drive nor the media, but the software. ... Especially since she said
that she burned some music with iTunes. iTunes has been known to
disable access to CDROM drives by other apps.

Can you verify this with any links to a webpage ?

If you Google for "missing CD drive" you should turn up a bunch.

It's been quite a while. After reading the threads below from the
iTunes forum, I now recall that the problem (at least the most common
one when I first became aware of it) was caused by an install and
subsequent UNinstall of iTunes 4.9 on systems that had an early version
of Roxio EZCDCreator. What happens is that the "upperfilter" and
"lowerfilter" registry entries associated with the CDROM drive get
disconnected from realty.

As you can see, however, apparently the interaction between EZCD and
iTunes 4.9 isn't the only cause of this common problem.
