When I try to run 'Disk Defragmenter' I get a message bar that says:

"This version of Disk Defragmenter does not support running more than one
instance". [OK] [More Info]

I have checked task manager and cannot find any instance where dfrg (or anything like
it) is running.

msconfig/services shows no instances either.

I have searched through 8997 msg in this group and not found anything to help with
this problem.

'Disc Cleanup' ran fine and reports a clean disk.

Any help is appreciated.

System is P-III, 665 Mhz. OS: XP Pro/SP-1 with 128 MB (512 MB on order)

Running the defrag command and Disk Defragmenter are mutually exclusive. If
you are using Disk Defragmenter to defragment a volume and you run the
defrag command at a command-line, the defrag command fails. Conversely, if
you run the defrag command and open Disk Defragmenter, the defragmentation
options in Disk Defragmenter are unavailable.

Thanks for the reply Rocky.

I am not trying to do what you are suggesting.

I am only trying to run start/programs/accessories/system tools/disk defragmenter.

When I click on disk fragmenter, I get the message bar:

"This version of Disk Defragmenter does not support running more than one
instance". [OK] [More Info]

I cannot find where the other instance of disk defragment is running.

I even tried running the above in 'safe mode' and got the same msg bar.

Thanks.

Don't bother with the defrag until you get more memory.

Thanks for the reply. The 512MB should be here by tomorrow.
The 15GB HD has 10.3GB free space so I would think that defrag would
at least work, although slooooowly. /%^)

I installed the new 512MB and now have 640MB of memory.

When I click on disk fragmenter, I still get the message bar:

"This version of Disk Defragmenter does not support running more than one
instance". [OK] [More Info]

Any ideas on how to locate the 'other' instance of defrag that is supposedly
running?

Thanks!
