Hello there,

I have been trying to run disk defragmenter on our windows 2000 server
box and it the whole server will hang and the only way to get it working
again is to unplug the power cord.

The files on the server seems to be fragmented based on the analysis. I
even tried stopping a lot of the unnecessary services like SQL server
2000 etc and unplug it from the network. But it will always hang when it
is about half way through the defrag.

Anybody encountered similar problems?

Eric

Run CHKDSK <Drive:> /R
on the drive to fix any problems.

Don't defrag then. It rarely produces any appreciable benefits.

Microsoft would disagree with your statement.

Fair enough. I've used and defragged systems from Win95 and earlier
on, server and workstation, using Microsoft software and using third
party software. I'd say that up to 98SE it was useful. From NT on it
has little or only a marginal effect. This is practical experience,
not theory. I appreciate that YMMV. Also, I don't believe that I've
used your software!
